Leadership opportunities are rarely convenient. To the contrary, leadership is most often built on inconvenience. Being a leader is not gifted or given away. You don’t get the title and then lead. It’s the opposite – you have to be the leader way before being anointed any title.
This is why true leaders are hard to find. Anyone, yes anyone, can lead, but few are willing to do what it takes. The character of a “leader” is always revealed in times of adversity, strife, and inconvenience. Difficult and challenging times expose leadership like a flashlight in the dark.
If you want to be a leader, I encourage you to thrive on inconvenience. If you want to attract leaders, seek opportunities that stretch you. When it feels the least comfortable, when things seem to be splitting apart at the seams, be the one who not only rights the ship, but puts it on a better course.
Adversity and challenges are part of life. You are in control of your reaction. Will you seize the opportunity to lead when it’s inconvenient?
